"Whoever controls Artificial Intelligence controls the world" ~ Vladimir Putin, Czar of Russia

"The saddest discovery of my academic years was that most of the scientists I met would rather bask in the lime light of fame than advance our understanding." ~ Richard Dawkins

"The thing about smart people is that they seem like crazy people to dumb people" ~ Stephen Hawking

An important difference between fundamental (aka theoretical) science and applied science is that without the former the latter would cease to exist. Other than perhaps, as a form of shamanism.

Another difference is that the former is currently under heavy threat, while the latter has been largely co-opted to serve the whims of the ruling oligarchs. For example, pure AI research has become a rarity. What remains has been merged into applied AI research, perverted by governments, private for-profit corporations, military, and criminal organisations (organised crime currently ranks 5th in terms of world GDP). All in ways which I believe to be extremely antithetical to fundamental human rights and freedoms.

A recent report from the University of Oxford, Cambridge University, OpenAI, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation sounds the same warning I and my colleagues have been shouting into the wind for years - AI creates disproportionate tools for criminals, oppressive governments, and others who would use it for their own gain. The report believes this is happening now to such an extent that some AI research should be kept secret. To those who have stated so vigorously that some science 1) cannot be kept secret and moreover 2) should never be kept secret, I would say that such objections inevitably come from the privileged class - from people who have never grown up or lived for decades under a totalitarian oppressive dictatorship. Already AI has been used by fascistic regimes such as Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, Indonesia, Zimbabwe, Russia, China (where AI was used to eliminate the Uighur dissent groups), ... and so on down a long list ... to hunt down dissenters, to eliminate opposition, and to automate universal behaviour control.

Some examples of the abuse to which I and many of my colleagues object:

  • AI is currently being used for development of self-directed autonomous armed machines of war,
  • deep learning profile analysis to monitor and limit free speech and dissent,
  • expanding and embedding neuromarketing as de facto culture,
  • social engineering of opinions and voting patterns on social media,
  • development of slaughterbots (miniaturised swarms of weaponised autonomous drones),
  • use by and for Orwell's Big Brother such as the Chinese unified combat platform and similar systems in Britain,
  • and so on down a sadly lengthy list.

To see this abuse of AI research in action one need look no further than these three simple examples:

  1. the use of AI purchased from U.S. corporations by dictator Erdoğan of Turkey to hunt down dissenters,
  2. the use of AI guided missiles raining down on Yemeni civilians,
  3. the automated AI run censorship system behind the Great Firewall of China

The vast majority of AI research is funded by military and private for-profit multibillion dollar corporations. In other words, by those who do not value ethical research over research for war and profit.

When criminals and their syndicates occupy the seats of power it behoves us all to protect scientific research from those who would debase it. The history of science is replete with examples of why this is so.

"I am a stable genius ... I am the world’s greatest person ... I'm a smart person ... So we had to get very, very tough on cyber and cyber warfare. It is a huge problem. I have a son ... He has computers. He is so good with these computers. It’s unbelievable. The security aspect of cyber is very, very tough. ... As far as the cyber ... we should be better than anybody else, and perhaps we’re not. .... We're losing a lot of people because of the Internet. We have to go see Bill Gates and a lot of different people that really understand what's happening. We have to talk to them about, maybe in certain areas, closing that Internet up in some way. ... The internet is {a terrorist's} recruitment tool which we must cut off & use better! ... Somebody will say, 'Oh freedom of speech, freedom of speech.' These are foolish people. We have a lot of foolish people." United States President Donald Trump

With such highly literate, modest, and intelligent politicians at the helm, "the cyber" is obviously in safe hands. Right?

For if history has shown us one irrevocable truth, it is that there is nothing whatsoever to fear from the machinations of "the world's greatest person" especially one who casually threatens nuclear war against independent nations. Nor is there even the remotest chance that such excellent politicians would ever abuse, misuse, or corrupt AI for use against the good of others. Surely scientific research with the potential of AI would never, ever be used by such folks to harm others en masse.

For as Einstein said before Hitler seized power: "It absolutely cannot happen here. The German people would never allow it."

We live, as the old curse goes, in interesting times What a world
